Library readers: Get help with multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security when you log in to a system or device by prompting you to provide an additional form of identification – for example, entering a code sent to your mobile phone.

This simply means making sure you are the person who is supposed to be accessing the service. If you buy things online, you will likely have seen your bank using this to confirm it’s really you before allowing the purchase.

Over the summer of 2021, the University of Cambridge implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all current staff and students. From 8 April 2024, this change will be extended to everyone who uses the University Library.

Your new username will be: yourlibrarybarcode@reader.lib.cam.ac.uk. This is located on the front of your library card, beginning with V. e.g. VABC1.

You should have received an email providing instructions on how to setup your new password.

If you did not receive your new one-time password, please contact readerservices@lib.cam.ac.uk

Registering with your mobile is often the easiest way to use MFA. The Microsoft authenticator app can be installed from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and is used only for the sole purpose of MFA.

If you do not have a smartphone, or do not want to use the app, you can still register your mobile number to receive an SMS text message which requires no software to be installed on your device.

You can find more information on how to setup MFA at https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/setting-library-account-login.

If you do not have a phone, please contact readerservices@lib.cam.ac.uk

Once you've set up a second way of authenticating who you are, you'll be asked to use it when you log in via a new device or browser, when you change your password or if you clear your settings. If you’re using the same device and browser.
